How Many Trades Can I Import ?
TurboTax software does have limits on the number of trades. Limits are common to most tax preparation software.
TurboTax limits depend on whether you are using an online or desktop product. The online platform only
allows 500 trades. The desktop platform allows around 2,200 trades. Trade limits are one reason
to choose the desktop platform.
Which is better, online or desktop ?
Each desktop edition includes Schedule D and Form 8949. Basic only lets you file one federal return,
while all other desktop editions allow up to five federal returns and include the state program free.
The only other difference between all desktop editions, is the amount of extra help.
If you have too many trades for desktop, your only option is to enter totals, and then mail a printout
to the IRS which mirrors Form 8949. You'll also have to include Form 8453 with the attachment, which
must be sent within 3 days of electronic filing.
